Day 3
The third morning we woke at 6am and left camp shortly before 8:30am in hope of catching up from our previous two slow days. Breakfast this morning was a very interesting attempt at bannock. To sum it up simply, this breakfast will forever be known as "<a href="/2006/08_moose/3/IMG_4774.jpg.html">the shit</a>".
The Trio Mountain campsite turned out to be only 2km from our campsite (therefore we camped at ~24km the previous night), although quite slow due to an enjoyably long stop to filter water shortly after leaving camp. Being at the Trio Mountain camp confirmed we were at 26km, and we had the goal of reaching Steppe Creek camp at 38km and possibly Slide Lake camp at 43km before dark.
By 8pm we had still not yet seen any campsite and began looking for a place to setup camp, short once again. I began marking points (on the GPS) which we could potentially use as a camp and eventually found a good spot along the river which had a few fire pits and had obviously been used in the past. Looking at a map, distances and the camp location a ranger gave us at Berg Lake (on day 7), it appears as if we were about 500m short, although we never did see Steppe Creek camp the next day.
We had a nice evening with a fire and proper dinner, and prepared for the rain clouds we saw in the distance (all 4 backpacks in our 1 vestibule). One thing I found interesting were some large flashes of light in the sky to the north. It almost appeared to be the flash of lightning although there was no thunder and no "bolt" that I could see, simply a large bright flash of light in the sky.
