Day 1
The last two to wake up (and therefore last to eat breakfast) were nominated to wait at the Moose River trailhead while the other two of us drove the van to the Berg Lake trailhead below Mount Robson. After the drive, filling out the where-were-going forms and walking 2km from the trailhead to the freeway, we began waving our thumbs at oncoming traffic trying to get back to our trailhead.
After probably an hour of no luck (either smiles, pointing at their children in the back seat, or being completely ignored by drivers), we found some luck with a greyhound bus driver who had stopped to pick up 3 backpackers (who actually purchased tickets). Unfortunately (and understandably) the bus couldn't just stop aside the freeway at the trailhead, instead we stopped at a boat launching site at the SE corner of Moose Lake. From there we walked/ran/balanced ~4km along the railroad tracks and arrived at the trailhead around 1pm.
We started the actual hike shortly after 1pm, aiming to get to Resplendent Creek camp (at ~15km) for our first night. The first section of the trail (~5km) was burnt although quite green, regrown, and in good condition. Even with an easy to follow trail we still started off very slow while everyone wore in the backpacks and found that comfortable spot for all the weight on the back. We stopped for a quick brake at about 3km, where I left my Swiss Army knife, then stopped for a late lunch along the river around 5km.
Shortly after leaving lunch we hit the first section of the trail really affected by the forest fire. Most of the trees were bare and black, many fallen over across the path (dead trees fall over easyâ¦), some already cut from earlier in the year. The conditions made the trail often disappear and reappear creating some fun but often very slow route finding while climbing/balancing over all the fallen black trees.
Shortly after 8pm and just over 9km we found a fire pit beside 2 relatively nice places to setup the tents and decided to call it a day, 6km short and in the middle of
